Hobo of the Year 2018

Hobo of the Year 2018

Kelly Nelson, a long-time flautist member of the Original Hobo Band and a dedicated member of the band's Executive Committee, receives the annual Hobo of the Year award. This award is usually presented at the annual Winter Blast, but Kelly was unable to be present at that time...so, at the very next rehearsal (or sighting, as it were), Kelly was presented with the framed certificate of the award.
Congrats, Kelly!

Alan Leads the Band

Rainspotted, whistle and baton at the ready, and fresh off the plane from Florida, former business manager and percussionist Alan Weinstein arrived at Ocean City to lead the band as Drum Major. Alan is a life member of the Original Hobo Band, and recently had relocated to Florida for health reasons (you gotta admit, the sunshine is rather inviting).

Some old Hobos just can't stay away. Former members are like that -- they heed the call to the excitement of a parade. Many band members have been marching for years, and continue to participate, as long as legs (and lungs) endure.

After all, there is nothing like a parade. Very few community bands have a marching unit that is willing to travel almost anywhere in New Jersey, and even out of state, when transportation and weather permit. And some members (like the one pictured on the right) will travel long distances just for the excitement of that moment -- to march again with old friends.

It was great to see you again, Alan. You need to come back North more often!
